予想通り高濃度の “鉄分” だった．第一部「昭和最果て巡礼記」（pp. 11-151）に描かれているローカル線風景が心に染み入る．それだけに，第二部「巡礼から五十年。最果ての鉄路は今……」（pp. 153-224）に綴られている “地方消滅” の経緯は諸行無常とはいえ言うべき言葉がもうない．ワタクシが学部生の頃に道北から道東にかけて一人旅したときに乗った羽幌線・天北線・渚滑線・興浜北線・興浜南線・湧網線はもうない．

二日間に及ぶ懸命の捜索の末に地層の最下部からやっと掘り出した．ちょうど一世紀前の1918〜19年に世界的に大流行した〈スペイン風邪〉の歴史をたどった大著．もともと医療用具だった「マスク」がパンデミックを恐れた一般市民の間に急速に広がっていくようすが描かれている．マスク着用条例が敷かれたサンフランシスコでは：「マスクもかけずに挨拶することが著しく礼を失することになり，かけないでいる人は他人に相手にされなくなり」（p. 134-5）．第8章「洋上のインフルエンザ」では閉鎖空間である船の中で蔓延したインフルエンザがもたらす災厄が接岸・上陸したあとも続いたと書かれている．まちがいなくタイムリーな本．新装版もすでに品切れとのことだがいま必死のパッチで重版しているらしい．

読了．手練の日本酒ライターによる蔵元復活物語．福島の浪江町で東日本大震災に遭い，蔵ごと山形に移転して酒造りを続ける．東京農大醸造学科を軸とする極太人脈の威力はものすごいな．鈴木酒造〈磐城壽〉をいただく機会はそう多くはないのだが，確かに魚介類のアテにとても合う風味と太さだとワタクシは感じた．〈磐城壽〉のラベルには漁船の羅針盤と「IWAKI KOTOBUKI — “The Fishermen's Toast” 」という木下酒造（〈玉川〉蔵元）のフィリップ・ハーパー杜氏の言葉が記されている．同じ著者の『闘う純米酒：神亀ひこ孫物語』（2006年12月13日刊行，平凡社，270 pp.，本体価格1,500円，ISBN:4-582-82450-1 → 版元ページ｜平凡社ライブラリー）や『闘う葡萄酒：都農ワイナリー伝説』（2013年1月23日刊行，平凡社，東京，4 color plates + 279 pp., 本体価格1,900円，ISBN:978-4-582-83604-2 → 版元ページ）とは一線を画す味わいを楽しんだ．さて，近場で〈磐城壽〉を探さないと．
