著者の晩年の著作は植物学史や自然哲学を主題にしたものが多い．なかでも本書は稀覯書．今回入手した一冊は，アメリカのミシガンにある Adrian College の Shipman Library から処分された本だ（図書番号：QK641.A68）．深緑色のハードカバー版はこの時代のケンブリッジ大学出版局の本の典型．のどは補修されている．植物形態，アリストテレス，大アルベルトゥス，ゲーテ，ダーシー・トムソン，etc...．随所に挿入されている植物の線画イラストがとても魅惑的．本書にはリプリント版もあるし， Google Books でその一部を見ることもできるんだけどね，やっぱりつい初版を手にしたいという仄暗い慾望が……．
