本書は系統学の本ではなく離散数学の本なので要注意．10年前に出た：Charles Semple and Mike Steel『Phylogenetics』（2003年2月6日刊行，Oxford University Press［Oxford Lecture Series in Mathematics and Its Applications: 24］, Oxford, xiv+239 pp., ISBN:0198509421 [hbk] → 目次｜版元ページ）は，タイトルにうっかり誘引され，速攻で息絶えた “生物学者” もいたと聞く．本書は生物学者にとってはさらに “読者死亡率” が高いと思われる．「系統学」の裾野は想像以上に広がっている．
