一世紀前の百科事典辞書が持ちこまれた．正式タイトルはとても長ったらしい：A Standard Dictionary of the English Language Upon Original Plans, Designed to Give, in Complete and Accurate Statement, in the Light of the Most Recent Advances in Knowledge, in the Readiest form for Popular Use, The Orthography, Pronunciation, Meaning, and Etymology of all the Words, and the Meaning of Idiomatic Phrases, in the Speech and Literature of the English Speaking Peoples. Complete in One Volume. A New Edition, Revised and Enlarged．束の厚さは約14cmもあって，崩壊した背を雑にガムテープ補修されている．総革装だが経年劣化のため触ると真っ茶色に汚れてもうタイヘン．百科事典的大英語辞書の名にふさわしく，ところどころに石版画（リソグラフ）の彩色図版が挿入されている．同時代のOED初版とはぜんぜんちがうみたい．組織改編に伴う居室の移転で “放出” された古書とのこと．国内の他の公的機関には所蔵されていないようなので（CiNii Books 曰く），とりあえずワタクシの部屋の一角に安置しておきましょうかね．そういう “漂流本” がほかにも多々あるので， “ご本人” にとっても居心地はきっと悪くないだろう．
