2009年2月26日の午後，山階鳥類研究所名誉所長の黒田長久さんが92歳で逝去された（→朝日新聞訃報｜読売新聞訃報）．1980年代から90年代はじめにかけては，日本生物地理学会の大会や評議員会で同席する機会が多く（昔からこの学会はそういう人脈のある会だった），また当時は大会終了後の懇親会にも参加されることがよくあった．
1990年か91年の大会のとき，会場だった東大総合研究資料館（現・博物館）近くの〈庄や〉で懇親会をしたときに話をしていて，「そういえば，三中さん，こういう本を最近読んでいるのですが……」と見せてくれたのがこの本だった．
発展分岐学の歴史を科学哲学の観点から論じた真っ赤な表紙のこの本が黒田さんの手提げかばんから取り出されるとは予想もしていなかったので，20年近く経った今でもなお記憶しているエピソードだ．
