どちらかといえば “教科書” 的な色合いが強かった旧版と比較すると，今回の改訂では内容的にがらりと様変わりしているようだ．分岐学派の置かれている学問的状況ががらりと変わったから当然の変化だとワタクシは考える．この改訂第3版は，ざっと見た感じでは，同著者による前著：David M. Williams and Malte C. Ebach『Foundations of Systematics and Biogeography』（2008年1月刊行，Springer-Verlag, Berlin, xviii+309pp., ISBN:978-0-387-72728-8 → 目次｜版元ページ｜コンパニオン・ブログ）の延長線上に位置づけた方がいいかもしれない．系統ではなく分類を重視する基本方針の点で．
