比較宗教学の古典．「Privately printed for subscribers only」とのことなので，一般に売られた本ではなく，事前予約者にのみ頒布するというかたちでの限定的な出版物だったのだろう．先年，リプリント版が出たが，原本はほとんど入っていないらしく，日本の公的機関では奈良女子大にしか蔵書されていないようだ．
本文２巻だけでも1200頁を越す大著だが，別添されている世界の“宗教系統樹”チャートが圧巻（サイズは7.5 feet × 2.25 feetもある）．人間の宗教的思想の根源は，「太陽崇拝」「火炎崇拝」「樹木崇拝」「祖先崇拝」そして「性器崇拝」の五つにさかのぼれると仮定して，宗教のリネージがどのように分岐し，また融合してきたのかをたどろうとする．Forlong にとって「人間の宗教的信念」はどのように「進化」してきたと捉えられたのだろうか．
中尾佐助が『分類の発想』の中で展開している“宗教分類”の体系は，Forlong のそれと比べるのが適当だと思うようになった．〈中尾佐助著作集〉第V巻『分類の発想』の月報でもその点に言及した．
