以下の事例もまた “闇” のひとつといえるかもしれない．Francis A. Bather のロンドン地質学会会長演説（Bather 1927）は，90年も前の記事であるにもかかわらず，分類学と系統学との関係を論じるとき，現在でもときどき引用（言及）される基本文献である．問題はその出典の確定だ．『系統体系学の世界』の文献リストでは当初は次のように引用した：

確かに，ロンドン地質学会のアーカイヴを参照すると，当該巻の冒頭ページには『Proceedings of the Geological Society of London』と大書されている．ワタクシはてっきりこれが誌名だと長らく思いこんでいた．世の中には『Proceedings of 〜』なる誌名をもつジャーナルは山ほどあるからだ．しかし，実はそれはまちがいだった．ロンドン地質学会の会報は，創刊された1845年から1970年までは『The Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London』が正式名称だったからだ．
とすると，上の『Proceedings of the Geological Society of London』はいったい何なのか．どうやら一般投稿論文を掲載する『Journal』のセクションとは区別して，広報や訃報あるいは寄付者一覧など学会事務報告をまとめたセクションを『Proceedings』と呼んでいたらしい．ノンブルが『Journal』では通常のアラビア数字 1, 2, 3 … なのに，『Proceedings』ではローマ数字 i, ii, iii, … なのはそのせいか．で，Batherの会長演説（Presidential address）もまた，他の一般論文が載る『Journal』のセクションではなく，この『Proceedings』セクションに別格扱いで掲載されたようだ．
そんなわけで，この文献項目はけっきょく次のように修正することになった：
