おお，ビッグ・サイエンスにしてサイバーサイエンスな“分類学”の報告書だ！ 昨年来，出版が予告されていたが，やっと出たか．『The New Taxonomy』というタイトルは，もちろんこの叢書〈Systematics Association Special Volume Series〉の第1巻に祭り上げられた歴史的論文集：Julian Huxley (ed.)『The New Systematics』（1940年刊行，Oxford University Press，viii+583 pp.）を受けている．その意図するところは，あるいは宣伝戦略は明らかだ．実に“政治的に上手い”なあ．
まずは，表紙のデザインがふるっている．“GBIF”，“AToL”，“MorphoBank”，“TreeBASE”などなどの時代のキーワードが「Taxonomy Cyber Infrastructure」という“たが”によってキュッと締められている．内容をぱらぱらみても，“New Taxonomy”とか“e-Taxonomy”というキーワードが随所に散りばめられている．分類学は今後は「メガ・サイバーサイエンス」を目指すということを自他ともに認めたのか？（ホンマか？）
本論文集をひもときつつ，Christine Hine『Systematics as Cyberscience: Computers, Change, and Continuity in Science』（2008年3月刊行，The MIT Press［Series: Inside Technology］，320 pp.，ISBN:9780262083713 [hbk] → 目次｜版元ページ）を併読すれば，きっとこの“新しい分類学”に対する見方は変わるよねえ．
—— それは誤読，それとも幻想．まさか真相？（“新装”ではあるが） Huxleyの『The New Systematics』の実像が何であったかを思い起こすとき，あまり楽観的になるのは禁物よとクレイオーは言っているように思う．
