現代生態学の〝戦記〟

　地道な研究の蓄積は科学を推進する。しかし、実験観察とデータ収集だけがすべてではない。科学者個人あるいは研究者コミュニティーがたどってきた時代背景のなかで、全体を覆う空気のような理念や教義や政治的信条が長年にわたって科学に影響を及ぼすことがある。本書は、１９７０～９０年代の日本の生態学者たちが、Ｅ・Ｏ・ウィルソンの「社会生物学」、Ｒ・ドーキンスの「利己的遺伝子」、Ｗ・Ｄ・ハミルトンの「包括適応度」などのキーワードに象徴される新たな学問的思潮（著者は「黒船」と呼ぶ）に対してどのような構えで立ち向かったのかを、その論争の中心にいた著者が書き綴った“戦記物語”だ。

　第２次世界大戦後は日本共産党が推進したソビエトのルイセンコ遺伝学がもてはやされ、その後は今西錦司の全体論的進化論が大流行した。正統派の進化論の普及が長らく阻まれてきた日本ならではの“精神的学問風土”とはいったい何だったのか……長年にわたる戦いの日々の“語り部”として著者は余人をもって代えがたい。

　本書の大部分は当時、公表された著者の論文や記事の復刻である。著者は「個々の研究者が個々の分野で卓越した業績をあげることと、研究者集団が自らの位置を現代生物学の構図のなかに適切に位置づける視野をもつことは、いうまでもなく相対的に独立した事態」であると言う。評者と同世代あるいはそれ以上の“戦中派”の生態学者・進化学者ならば本書のメッセージを（その行間に込められた含意とともに）きちんと読み取ることができるだろう。もっと若い“戦争を知らない”世代の読者にとっても、本書はきっと手に取る価値があるだろう。自然科学研究の“風景”はたえず変貌するが、現在の平和な科学研究の“景色”の足元にはかつての“激戦”の痕跡がそこかしこに埋まっているからだ。

　科学とはこの上もなく人間臭い営為である。

昨年，本書を読了したときのワタクシの感想（というかツイート束）はこちら → 三中信宏「『利己的遺伝子の小革命：1970-90年代 日本生態学事情』感想」（2019年11月22日）．最初の書評原稿に対しては読売新聞文化部から「当時の生態学が置かれていた政治的背景についてもっと詳しく」との “査読コメント” が付いた．確かに，ルイセンコや今西への言及は今の若い読者にとっては補足説明が必要だろう．
