多変量解析法のひとつであるクラスター分析を1950年代に開発し，1960〜70年代にかけて一世を風靡した数量表形学派の創始者だった Robert R. Sokal と夫人の伝記．ユダヤ系の出自をもつ Robert がナチスの侵攻を逃れて，オーストリアから夫人の母国である上海へ亡命したことを柱にまとめられているらしい．上海の得体のしれない魅力は一度でも行けばわかる．Sokal 夫人が中国人であることは前から知っていたが，「Liebesgeschichte」が書かれるほど劇的な人生を送ったとはまったく知らなかった．
著者である Stefan Schomann のサイトには，写真も含めて詳しい書誌情報が載っている．もちろん，即発注した．それにしても，Sokal がつい先日の4月9日に逝去していたことも，こんなまとまった伝記が4年も前に出ていたことも見逃していたとは，あまりにうかつすぎて穴があったら入りたい．また，なんと2010年には中国語版も出ていたとは！：李士勋译『最后的避难地 — 上海：罗伯特·劳伊文·索卡尔和朱丽叶·杨珍珠的爱情故事』（2010年9月刊行，人民文学出版社）．
なお，Sokal の名を広めた生物統計学の教科書の15年ぶり改訂版が今年出た：Robert R. Sokal and F. James Rohlf『Biometry, Fourth Edition』（2012年刊行, W. H. Freeman, San Francisco, ISBN:9780716786047 [hbk] → 版元ページ）．あわせて，統計数表もアップデートされた：F.
