原書は1849年に刊行された．脊椎動物の「原型（archetype）」の超有名な図版が載った本．この時代に1世紀前の反ダーウィニストの本を復刻する意味は十分に考える必要があるだろう．オーウェンの書いた部分そのものは120ページほどしかないが，編者を含めた解説章が100ページもある．むしろこの部分を読む方がおもしろいのかもしれない．
