Joseph Henry Woodger

ゆえあって，ぱらぱらめくっている．この本は，前著『Biological Principles: A Critical Study』（1929年刊行， Routledge and Kegan Paul）を著した Woodger が，A. N. Whitehead & Bertrand Russell の数理論理学の大著『Principia Mathematica』（1910-1913年刊行， Cambridge University Press）に触発されて，生物学における「公理論的体系」の構築を目指した著作に位置づけられる．本書の序文で，彼はこの本の目標は「生物学的代数学（biological calculus）」の構築にあると宣言する（Preface, p.viii）．ここでいう「代数学」とは「公理的体系」と同義である（Chapter 2, p.18）．だから，タイトルに偽りはない．
生物学史家 V. B. Smocovitis『Unifying Biology: The Evolutionary Synthesis and Evolutionary Biology』（1996年刊行， Princeton University Press, ISBN:0691033439）の中で，Woodger が同世代の生物学に及ぼした影響を評価している（Chapter 5, pp.100-114）．もちろん，この点に関しては見解が分かれるところでもある（たとえば，Biology and Philosophy 誌における Joe Cain と Smocovitis とのやりとり：Vol. 15, pp.535-558, 2000）．
もともと Woodger の本はどれもレアものが多いらしく，『The Axiomatic Method in Biology』（1937年）にいたっては神戸の理研CDBにしか所蔵がない（前はなかったはずだが，いったい誰が買ったのでしょう?）．ぼくがもっているコピーは故・太田邦昌*1さんからの孫コピーで，親本は発生生物学者だった故・白上謙一*2の蔵書だと聞いている．さすがに孫コピーともなると，活字がつぶれて判読しにくいところも出てくる．しかし，この本は古書価格だと平均して1万〜2万円台で入手できるからまだいい．問題は『Biological Principles』（1929年）で，こちらは出品されるたびに「5万〜6万円」という値が付く稀覯本と化している．しかし，調べたところ，1冊だけ「5千円台」という破格値がついていた．いったいどういう現物かがちと心配だが．
